Timbuktu’s Lost Treasures

Unreported World reporter Krishnan Guru-Murthy travels to Mali to investigate a society ravaged by continual fightings and unrest.

The severity has risen to the point where death-squads roam the country side, killing entire villages and anyone going against their own ideology.

The fights are usually clashes between jihadi extremists and those who’s taken it upon themselves to hunt the jihadists.

Led by a group of animal hunters who believe and use magical powers, anyone who strikes them as an extremist are killed on sight.

The hunters believe they are the final frontier against the jihadists, as their own goverment and army has given up on the war, protecting their people and ancient treasures.

These continuous violent occurrences has severely impacted Mali’s tourism and threatened the upkeep of significant historic sites, plunging the country further into poverty and chaos.

But beside a country plagued by poverty and civil unrest, what are Timbuktu’s lost treasures?
