UFO Cults seeks out one of the stranger cults to visit Earth, that of the Heaven’s Gate.
As if it was straight out of a sci-fi novel, Heaven’s Gate members believed the planet Earth was about to be “recycled” (remade), and the only chance to survive was to leave it immediately.
The cult believed that evil space aliens – called Luciferians – falsely represented themselves to Earthlings as “God” and conspired to keep humans from developing.
In order to develop oneself, members had to shed themselves of all Earthly attachments.
This meant all members had to give up all human-like characteristics, such as their family, friends, sexuality, individuality, jobs, money, and possessions.
As a final way to absolve oneself to a higher state, Heaven’t Gate members sought to ascend to a new spiritual level by leaving their encumbered human body behind through suicide.
After their suicide, members would be picked up by an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Hale–Bopp.
The cult’s spiritual leader Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997) administrated the whole ordeal from Heaven’s Gate’s origin in 1974 to their mass suicide on March 26, 1997.
39 members of the group were discovered by police investigators dead from phenobarbital mixed with apple sauce and vodka.
Additionally, they secured plastic bags around their heads after ingesting the mix to induce asphyxiation.
Besides looking at the Heavens Gate and their belief system, the documentary also seek to answer a few questions regarding cults in general:
Why do some people become enveloped in a spiritual world-ending cult which ultimate outcome is death? And how did the Heaven’s Gate spiritual leader Marshall Applewhite sway 39 people to kill themselves?
Find out more as we delve into UFO Cults: Heaven’s Gate and investigate to find out more about the illusive cult.
